In 1916, the US War Department contracted with the Fort Collins Arsenal to produce a new type of rifle known as the Lewis Gun. The gun was designed by American engineer, Major General Lewis A. Mowat and it used a rotating bolt system to fire cartridges from a Chamber magazine. The first rifles were made in 1917 and they were known as the M1917 Rifle. In 1932, Fort Collins became home to Rocky Mountain Laboratories which was responsible for developing many important firearms technologies including the Thompson Gun and later, the AK-47 rifle. In 1948, Rocky Mountain Laboratories merged with Brownells Incorporated forming Brownells Incorporated Research & Development Company (BIRD). BIRD became part of FN Herstal Corporation in 1973. FN Herstal Corporation is now part of IMI Weapons Systems AG.
Fort Collins is a major city in the U.S. state of Colorado. The population was 59,523 at the 2010 census, and within its limits are over 120 municipalities. Fort Collins is the 8th most populous city in Colorado and the second most populous in Western Colorado after Golden. In 1938, Milton Sperling bought 1% of all common stock in Mather Electric Power Company which would later become City National Bank. He built his first home near present day NorthPark Boulevard/Alameda Street in 1954; he sold his interests in City National Bank two years later for $1 million to create one of America's largest privately held municipals with assets totaling $19 million ($ when adjusted for inflation). Today's City National Bank building was designed by Pueblo architect Alfred Crippsstrom and completed in 1957 – becoming one of only four municipal buildings nationally designated as a historic landmark by the National Register of Historic Places. At that time it served not just Fort Collins but also Pueblo, Loveland, Durango, Greeley Springs and Westwater Village – areas now part Ofcivic County including Aurora to its north; Vail to its east; Telluride to its south; Aspen toits west; Lakewood Ranch toits northwest - making it one municipality with more than 100 neighborhoods represented! Today’s economy depends heavily upon agriculture but also includes manufacturing including aircraft services manufacturer Boeing Co., energy retailers Rocky Mountain Energy Corporation (RME)and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (APC), health care giant Humana Inc., local food distributor World Market Inc., retail giants Costco Wholesale Club warehouses chains Supervalu Stores Inc., Walmart Supercenter stores across Western Colorado Springs area known colloquially as "the industrial belt" - stretching from Longmont up north past Commerce City along Interstate 25 then continuing west past Aspen before terminating at Thornton AFB just outside Englewood Cliffs

In 1885, a U.S. Patent 711,878 was issued to George Eastman for the design of a firearm that could be attached to a target with a quick release system. The patent is still in use today as the original Eastman rifle. In 1927, Charles Eagan designed and manufactured the first successful rifle using this type of target holder. The early versions were made from brass and had an open-ended metal tube that allowed cartridges to be fed into the gun without having to remove the target from its holder. These tubes were eventually replaced by metal boxes that held four rounds each and had a handle on one side which allowed reloading while shooting without taking down the target.
