The first permanent white settlers in Fort Collins were James Watt and his brother, David. They arrived in 1827 and soon began to build a homestead on the east bank of the Arkansas River. The Watt Family name was eventually shortened to Fort Collins by the early pioneers because they could not find any other family with that name living in Colorado. In 1835, James Watt married Mary Ann Whitehead and together they started a small grocery store on Main Street near what is now Pikes Peak National Park. This store became one of the first businesses in Fort Collins. In 1840, James Watt built a house on Constitution Hill which served as the home of the town's first mayor and school board members for many years. The house still stands today and is used as a museum today. In 1851, John Lanyon purchased land north of downtown from George Atherton for $1,000 cash. He quickly erected two houses – one called Pioneer House (now part of University Hall) and the other called Lanyon House – on this land which he named Fort Collins after himself and his wife Elizabeth Lanyon. These buildings still stand today as part ofFortCollins History Museum adjacent to Pikes Peak National Park Headquarters building next door! In 1865, Colonel Robert Epperson decided to move his Regiment (the First Colorado Infantry) from its previous location at Ft Carson into neighboring Larimer County so that it could be closer to military duties during the American Civil War. He also decided to establish an area known as Camp Epperson within Fort Collins limits so that Ft Collins residents could participate in this important activity! This camp later grew into present-day Castle Rock State Park! It wasn't until 1876 when railroad construction began upriver from Denver via Greeley that Ft Collins finally got its own railroad station! This new station was located just south of Main Street on what is now Jack London Square! In 1886, after more than 50 years of service as an agricultural center for eastern Colorado Springs (and before that Aspen), Fort Collins received its first municipal bond issue making it officially incorporated as a city! After much deliberation by City Councilmembers & citizens alike, voters approved Cityhood Resolution #5 on November 3rd 1886!!! This resolution stated: "That if at any time hereafter there should be question among ourselves respecting our incorporation into a Municipal Corporation we will endeavor thereto promptly apparent." On December 10th 1886 city officials held their third inaugural meeting where Mayor J.B Hargrave proposed ratifying City Charter Resolution #5 thereby becomingCityofFtCollins!!!!!
