In 1827, residents of Aspinwall Township north of downtown founded a post office under the name Aspinwall Ferrypost (now known as Heritage Hall). On December 12, 1829, a new post office was established at Ft. Collins with George Bird Griggs as Postmaster. It continued serving until 1861 when it became known as Ft. Colville after General James Halleck's commandant for that region during the Mexican War (1846-48). The first school in town was started in 1870 by Mrs. Anna Bowers McKnight with three students and nine teachers from nearby Aspinwall Township; this school closed in 1872 because wealthy ranchers donated enough money to build a replacement campus on nearby Pikes Peak Hill that year. Classes began at what is now Lewis and Clark College on November 1, 1880 under Principal Jacob Sisler after donations from local landowners John Dickey and Samuel Morse II following Larimer's victory over Santa Fe Colorados forces during Indian Wars #2 around October 15th – November 7th of that year near Pikes Peak National Park northeast of today's town limits where livestock grazing had been prohibited due to public protestations against ranching by US Cavalry commander General Arthur Drake McIntosh only days earlier while viewing results from Red River Census & Trade Mission #2 held at Ft Worth’s Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on September 17th alsonear today’s town limits just southwest of I-25 exit number 68A within mile or 2 miles or 3 miles or 4 miles [of] today’s City Limits]. On July 6, 1912 King William IV announced plans for a new military installation called Western Defense Forces Command located adjacent to what is now called White Sands Missile Range across South Platte River from present day Greeley which would become home to one million soldiers eventually becoming operational beginning December 25th 1914 serving alongside American Expeditionary Force troops during World War I primarily fighting off Austria – Hungary allied forces seeking entry into WWI while also protecting Uinta Mountains key railroad corridor running NW - SE - SW - NW - NE ) .
