In 1862, General George Armstrong Custer led his army into what was then Kansas Territory during their attempt to find Indian Killer territory east of Denver. After skirmishing with Indians for days leading up to this invasion, Custer's forces reached Ft. Collins on July 16th after crossing the Arkansas River at Montrose and marching for about two weeks through rugged country that included long stretches without water or food! As news spread about this encounter, civilian buildings such as churches and stores quickly began coming down around town due to vandalism by soldiers who looted them while supplies ran low; however, these structures would not be hit as hard as military installations which were razed along with anything valuable within easy reach (this practice continued until 1893 when Congress passed legislation giving citizens some control over public property destruction). In 1852Captain James Fetterman established a postern gate on what is now 8th Street North near Monument Hill allowing goods brought into town by wagonload from Carbondale past University Park down First Avenue onto Eighth Street Northeast for delivery to homes upriver had freedom from Customs inspections but could not take any produce home themselves which caused much inconvenience for residents who lived upstream or had gardens bordering those streets! On September 20th 1860 two men named Wigglesworth and Stephenson set out from Ft. Worth Texas aboard USS Constitution under command of Commodore Joshua Sloat headed towards Santa Fe New Mexico on a mission impossible: To explore oil reserves offshore off Albuquerque de Nuevo Mexico!! They didn't return until 1865!!! True enough there may have been some oil seeps off Albuquerque but nothing productive was found so no one can really say if Wigglesworth & Stephenson ever did find anything! Anyway back to our story…..
