In 1892, Evans, Colorado was founded and named after Major General John Evans. The town has been located in Pueblo County since 1912. In that same year, the United States Military Academy at West Point purchased land east of Evans for a new rifle range. On May 8th, 1912, the first live fire match was held at the new range. Today, Evans is home to one of America’s oldest rifle ranges and is considered to be one of the most popular shooting destinations in the country. In 1876, Evans was platted as a town in Routt County, Colorado. The town grew rapidly and by 1889 had a population of over 500 people. Evans became an important center for the coal industry and its Resources store remains one of the most popular tourist attractions today.
