Evans is a small town in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,491 at the 2010 census. Evans is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and is bordered by Telluride to the north and east, Aspen to the south and west, and Aimsontown to the northwest. According to the US Census Bureau, Evans has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6 km²), all of it land. The first Europeans to visit Evans were French traders in 1769-1770. The first settler in Evans was Isaac Evans who built a cabin on what is now Main Street in 1824. He named his place after George Washington for his role as commander of American forces during the Mexican War (1846-1848). Other early settlers included John Pemberton (1830) and Wm Hensley (1836). In 1868 Francis Drake founded an adobe rancho on what is now Garden Street which became known as Drake Rancho de la Vega y las Animas (Drake Rancho of White Sands). The rest of Clear Creek County was organized into Logan Township in 1870, but by 1880 most residents had moved away from Clear Creek Valley due to changing fortunes with respect to mining camps around Aspen and Aimsontown (). In 1902 James Fenton arrived from Colorado Springs with his family looking for land near Canon City where he could start a cattle business. After traveling through Evans they found that there wasn’t enough open country so they established their home there on top of Cripple Creek Reservoir while Fenton continued exploring other opportunities for farming or ranching properties in centralColorado. Fenton was president Of Colorado Dust Company which developed much of Today’s Evanston () today's Aspen (). For many years he controlled about two-thirds or allofAspenRancho(), oneofthelargest ranchesinColoradoandoneofthemost important agricultural holdingsinColoradoduringthattime period. He also ran several businesses including grocery stores, banks etc., until his death in 1940 at age 86 years old.) My grandfather, Willis Epps, was one of the first people to live in Evans County and he built his home near present day Thornton.
