In 1925, local farmers formed a cooperative to raise hay for local livestock including cows and horses; this led to development of nearby agriculture along both Ute Creek and Pawnee Creek as well as development near today's downtown Evans. In 1916, Kirtland Air Force Base was opened here by World War I veteran Colonel Elmer Sperry Beall; it served as headquarters for Ninth Air Force until 1945 when it was moved to Mount Weather AFB in North Carolina after the war.
