Evans, Colorado is a small town in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. The population was 557 at the 2010 census. Evans is located on U.S. Highway 6, east of Montrose and west of Aspen. The first Europeans to visit Evans were prospectors in 1859, when they discovered coal deposits there. By 1865, Evans had a post office and three stores. In 1870, the town had a school and two churches. A sawmill was built in 1875, and by 1880 Evans had four shops and sixty-six inhabitants. The railroad arrived in Evans in 1886, and by 1889 it had sixteen engine houses thereabouts. In 1902, a fire destroyed most of the town center; however, within five years all but one store reopened thanks to donations from citizens. A new courthouse was built in 1907; it replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by a fire in 1906. In 1912–13 a flood caused damage to several businesses; however, within fifteen months all but one were repaired or rebuilt thanks to federal funding through the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program administered by HUD.* From 1938 until 1945 (a time during which Evans experienced World War II), local farmers stored excess food supplies at an old cotton gin as part of Operation Lucky Strike* Today, Evans remains an agricultural community with some manufacturing activity around its two hospitals: One based out of veterinary medicine and another specializing in medical equipment production *HUD’s Low Income Housing Tax Credit program offered financial assistance for repairs or replacement of housing that was damaged as part of combat operations during World War II

Evans, Colorado was founded on July 14, 1912 by a group of men led by Chiving Evans. The town began as a small ranching community and quickly became an important center for the cattle industry in the area. The town saw its first commercial development in 1914 when it was chosen as the site for the first American Telephone and Telegraph Company store. By 1925, Evans had become one of the most important towns in southern Colorado. In that year, it was also named one of America's "50 Towns to Love". The town's progress during the years has been dramatic. In 1922, Evans became known as the "Capital of WesternColorado" when it hosted the opening of the Grand Canyon Parkway. During World War II, Evans served as a major bombing target; however, due to its location near Denver, no damage was done to either property or people. After the war ended, Evans continued to grow rapidly; in 1950 it had over 1,000 residents and became a city with its own government. However, population growth soon slowed and by 1960 Evans had only 100 residents remaining. That same year saw another significant change when Evans incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization which allowed for more rapid growth in both size and function since then (the incorporation would later lead to stronger efforts towards environmental preservation). Over time, many changes have taken place within Evans; some that are still ongoing such as increased focus on tourism (particularly camping and hiking opportunities), increasing access to education through local colleges/universities (including Northern Colorado University), and growing support for sustainable practices within both business and personal life. Despite this variety there is much commonality among all these developments - an intense focus on community building which has helped make Evans one of southwestern Colorado's most prosperous cities today
