Evans, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Evans is located on US Highway 6 east of Interstate 25 and north of US Highway 287. It is bordered by Asotin to the south, Canon City to the west, Golden to the north and Slaton to the east. The first settler in Evans was John Crouse in 1872. His land extended from what is now Evansville northeast to Walsenburg and northwest to Pueblo. The townsite was named after George Washington Evans, who had homesteaded there in 1868. Other early settlers included J.W Rhodes (1877-1914), who built a sawmill on Cottonwood Creek; Atherton Smith (1881-1976), who operated a bakery; Mable Hargrave (1884-1979), who raised chickens; Fannie Sweeny (1886-1970), who ran a grocery store; Harry Aiken (1900-1978), an electrician; Rev Dr Jesse Fletcher (1901-1983) pastor of First Presbyterian Church; Mrs Florence Beavers McFadden (1902-) teacher at Presentation School and later Anderson School before she became president of Allendale Elementary School District #2 A post office called Evans was established in 1872, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The first settler in present day Evans also received his name from this place – George Washington Evans – although he did not actually live there or ranch there: he came overland from Indian Territory via Laramie County into Wyoming Territory and homesteaded near present day Evanston just east of Asotin on May 1st, 1868

They moved to Denver where they ran the Evans-Winchester grocery store for many years. They also served as trustees of the University of Colorado from 1921-1929. From 1928-1960, they were also honorary members of the university's board of governors. TheEvanses are buried at Independence National Cemetery in Denver.
Evans was founded in 1872 by James H. Evans and his family. The town was named for General John A. Evans, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first store in the town was built by Mr. Evans and his brother-in-law, J.C. Nichols, on Main Street. In 1875, the first post office was established in the town and it continued to be operated until 1957 when it moved to its present location on Hoover Road. The first school in Evans was a one room schoolhouse that served students from kindergarten through eighth grade until 1907 when a larger building became available and it continued to serve students until 1975 when it closed down due to budget cuts. After the school closed down, Kindergarten through sixth grade were conducted at home with fifth through eighth grade being held at nearby schools until 1984 when a new elementary school opened which continues to serve students today.
