In 1912 construction began on what would be America's first hydroelectric power plant - Niagara Falls Dam - providing power for Buffalo (New York) residents through electric streetlights while also generating steam to heat up local homes during cold winters. The dam also served as a visible symbol of Progressivism that helped define Erie during that time period; popular culture often refers to this era as “The Gilded Age” or “The Progressive Era."
