Erie is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Erie is the county seat and largest city of Weld County. Erie is also the home to Pikes Peak National Monument and Mount Evans National Historic Site. The first Europeans to visit what is now Weld County were French fur traders in the mid-1700s. The area that includes Erie was part of Spanish Rancho San Luis Rey de Atacama, which was sold to Englishman George Washington in 1786. In 1801, Washington's son-in-law John Lyon purchased portions of Rancho San Luis Rey de Atacama from Spain for $10,000 CAD. On July 8, 1827, Denver City incorporation was granted to Lafayette Township by U.S. General James Kieft with boundaries including what are now Erie and parts of Ashtabula and Park Cities townships east of Newtonville Avenue and north of Mesa Street (now Westminster Avenue). In 1868, when Routes 24 and 25 were built through Weld County by Colonel Franklin Dyer as part of the Central Pacific Railroad's routing plan for cross country travel between Fort Collins and Omahavia Cache Valley Passand Needles peak (later known as Mount Evans), many people who lived near present day Erie began leaving their homes for work on the railroad line. By 1870 there were over 1,000 residents living in Lafayette Township; however by 1880 only 221 residents lived there due to growing industry around downtown Erie and other areas outside of the township limits while more than 1,500 people lived within walking distance or bike ride of downtown Buffalo Bill’s Tavern on Main Street since it opened its doors in 1865 as a general store run by Buffalo Bill’s father-in-law Wm Haddon Harrison Jr.. Erie, Colorado is a town located in southern Weld County, Colorado. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. Erie was founded on July 1, 1892 by citizens of the city of Greeley and the unincorporated community of Northfield. Erie is one of the original towns in Weld County and was named for Lake Erie. In 1905, Erie joined forces with neighboring Greeley to form the new city of Greeley-Erie. On November 15, 1907, voters in both cities passed an ordinance declaring themselves separate municipalities separate from each other until a merger could be effected by referendum. On May 3, 1912, residents of Erie voted to merge with Greeley-Erie as well; this merger became effective on October 1st. On December 14th 1922 two planes crashed just outside town killing all six people onboard: pilot Arthur Latham & his passenger Roy Purdy were both killed instantly while passengers Edwin Hubble (a mail carrier) and John Girdler (an office worker) survived but were seriously injured. This crash has been cited as being one of the most tragic events in Erie's history due to its significant loss of life and ensuing impact on the community's economy which still suffers today from it over 100 years later. The first post office in Erie opened on January 7th 1894. The last post office closed on September 30th 1959 leaving only name address correspondence remaining throughout that time period!
