Erie, Colorado is a small city located in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. Erie was founded on November 3, 1867, by brothers Edwin and James Gifford. The City of Erie was incorporated on February 14, 1872. Erie is the county seat for Larimer County. The population of Erie was 19,752 as of 2010. The first post office in Erie opened on April 17, 1868. The first store in town was opened by Wm. Fenton on Market Street. In 1870 the railroad arrived and named it the Western Pennsylvania Railroad Company Line No. 1 (now the Amtrak Empire Builder). On October 12, 1870, William Hogue became the first settler in what would become Erie and began building a house at present day Main Street and Delaware Avenue (now Delaware Avenue East). In 1875-76 two mining accidents led to an increase in business for local merchants who supplied goods to miners working near Grand Lake Superior; one accident killed five men and injured many more while another caused $5 million dollars worth of damage to infrastructure including bridges over Big Creek Canyon that remain today as ruins of structures once used by coal miners In 1886 when a large fire destroyed much of downtown Buffalo Bill Cody's old mining camp north of town see also "A History of Buffalo Bill Cody" by Loren Coleman On January 6th 1902 James Gifford donated land west side First Street between Third and Fourth Streets which became known as "Gifford Park". This park now includes a children's play area called Gifford Playground which is open year-round with no admission charge . On December 5th 1903 oil well #1 turned out to be dry after being drilled 900 feet below ground surface just south off I-25 exit 221 about 7 miles east from where development started around this time
