Erie is part of the Fort Collins-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is also included within the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Combined Statistical Area. Erie has been inhabited by Native Americans for over Paleoindian times. The first European tosight Erie was an American trader named George Washington in 1794 while exploring the area for mineral rights. He christened the river "The Ohio" after his native country of Virginia. In 1802, John Crouch founded Cedar Creek Colony on Cedar Creek east of present day Erie. This settlement served as a model for future Anglo settler communities throughout western Colorado and central Wyoming. In 1824, General James Halleck became military governor of Weld County and ordered all Indian hostilities to stop until further notice. On October 1st of that year, he issued an order entitled "An Order to All Chiefs and Warriors in Our County". This order stated that any person who did not deliver up their weapons or property within three days would be punished with death or 10 years imprisonment without parole. Because there were no roads or trails in those days, this order had a significant impact on the development of Erie as a town. It wasn't until 1851 when The Erie Railroad was built from Fort Collins east to Saint Vrain and then north along current day US Highway 61 to Buffalo Gap which provided transportation links between Fort Collins and other settlements in central Colorado Springs and Larimer County In 1875, Drury & Company began operating a sawmill on what is now Main Street in downtown Erie which continued operation until 1964 when it closed down due to low demand from local residents combined with increased competition from larger mills around the state In 1916, Eden Brewing Corporation began operations as one of only two breweries licensed by the Colorado State Board of Agriculture Erie's first post office opened its doors on July 12th of that year under the name "Nina" On December 25th of that year (the date which remains etched into history), prohibitionist candidate Woodrow Wilson won his first election as President of America against incumbent Andrew Johnson Today's economy depends largely upon tourism which brings muchneeded revenue into our town .
