They named their new settlement Fort Niagara after General John Burgoyne's victory over British forces at Saratoga in 1813. In 1818 Erie was incorporated as a village and became part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area that served as its economic center until 2002 when Aurora took control. In 1902 the Erie Railroad was founded to provide transportation between Denver and Aurora. The railroad ceased operations in 2006 but its tracks remain used by Amtrak as part of the Rocky Mountain Railway system today. Today, Erie is home to several shopping centers including one called The Strip mall which opened in 2003 adjacent to Interstate 25 and offers a variety of retail stores including Sears Tower department store, Macy's Department Store and JCPenney outlet mall along with several restaurants such as Popsicles Pizza Hut and Subway sandwich shop along with two high school districts (Erie High School District #1 serving students from east side neighborhoods near I-25/Broadway Avenue while district #2 serves students from west side neighborhoods southwest of I-25). There are also two churches located within walking distance: First Congregational Church located on Webster Street outside downtown while Second Presbyterian Church located just east of Main Street inside city limits has been serving congregants since 1898
