Erie, Colorado is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 21,752 at the 2010 census. Erie was founded on the Great Western Railroad in 1892 and became a town in 1903. It was incorporated as a city in 1907. In 2001, Erie merged with the neighboring city of Scranton to form what is now known as Scranton/Erie City combined government. The area that would make up Erie has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 13,000 years according to archaeological evidence found at nearby sites. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish traders who passed through the region in 1540-1541 when they traveled from Mexico City to trade goods with the local Pueblo people. When Spain lost its power over Mexico after Independence from Spain in 1821, American settlers began arrives here beginning in 1825 seeking land grants and mineral rights for their new country. The first permanent settler arrived here on July 14th of that year when George Aitken landed his ship "Discovery" off Long Island Sound near present day Buffalo Gap Lake and named his new settlement "Erie". The first town meeting held here occurred on October 8th of that year and consisted of only Aitken's original colonists as members due to lack of space within the new community. The name chosen for this fledgling town – which still stands today - was Erietta (the name given by Captain John Fitch upon landing) after his wife who served as acting mayor during these early days of operation. On November 10th of 1892, Erie's incorporation papers were filed with the Weld County Recorder’s Office following an election held bylaws that allowed towns not exceeding 2,500 residents to incorporate without prior approval from their respective county commissioners. After one year of operations it was determined that Erie would not be able to support itself and on January 6th 1893 it ceased all operations effective at 5:00 PM sharp citing “failure To Enlargeowntown” as the main reason behind its demise. Although disbanded it had already left a lasting legacy on Erie which is still seen today thanks to its many cultural attractions such as art galleries, theatres and music venues dotting every inch of downtown streetscape including State Street between First Avenue & Huron Street where nearly every restaurant serves alcohol; along with popular tourist destinations like Asphalt Jungle Brewery and Niagara Falls Casino Resort just minutes away via Interstate 25 or I-70 respectively! In 1902 an act called An Act To Regulate Commerce And Navigation In Our River Estuary Was Passed Which Allowed Ships Loading And unloading cargo On The Western Shore Of Weldon Bay For Export From Our Ports At Buffalo Gap Lake Or Within 100 Miles Of This Place Without Permission From Our County Commissioners But This did Not Impulse Local Businesses To Open Up So They Did Instead Started Developing Areas Outside Of The Former Town Limits Which Led To What Is Now Downtown Scranton

Erie was founded on April 12, 1857 by men from Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Scranton, Pennsylvania as a rail stop on the Indian River Railroad. The town became an agricultural center in central Colorado with large areas of irrigated farmland used for growing citrus crops and other fruits and vegetables. The city's growth slowed during the Great Depression but resumed after World War II when industrial production increased in Erie thanks to new technology such as aluminum production from Ariton Industries Incorporated. In the 1990s Erie experienced a resurgence due to its role as a manufacturing center for plastics and metal products; however it has since lost some of its significance following suburban development within easy reach of downtown. The history of Erie can be traced back to 1857 when three men from Lancaster, PA (one of which had recently been transplanted to western Pennsylvania), arrived in what is now Erie County to explore new opportunities for agriculture in central Colorado. One reason why this area was chosen as an agricultural training ground was because it bordered both Ohio valley to the north and Wyoming valley to the south-west - two major transportation routes connecting eastern North America with Mexico City and other parts of South America at that time. With over 1 million acres (4,000 km2) irrigated farmland east of Denver by 1937, Erie quickly became one of the most important agricultural centers in western Colorado. In 1907 construction began on what would become known as "The Turnpike", which connected Cleveland, Ohio with Buffalo Gap near present-day Telluride via the current I-25 corridor between those cities. This road served not only logistical purposes but also recreational travelers who could enjoy panoramic views including Mount Rushmore National Monument located just outside Cleveland on peak summer days; this made it one of very few high-traffic roads throughout much of Western US at that time! As more people moved into eastern Colorado during Prohibition (1912–1933), industry started booming again thanks to advances in heavy machinery such as aluminum production from Ariton Industries Corporporated (now part Of Otter Tail Machinery Co.). In addition local farmers managed large acreages under irrigation using water diverted from nearby rivers or reservoirs while still complying with traditional crop rotation techniques. By 1951 over 60%of all rural family income came FROM THE GRAINS THEY grew!
