In 1978, Buffalo Arms Company relocated its operations from Elmira, New York to Buffalo after selling its assets to Anschutz Corporation for $1 million dollars ($102 million today). Erie is a city in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. Erie was founded on the lower reaches of the Clear Creek River in 1887. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now Erie was Pedro Alvarado, who arrived in 1598 and named it "Nuestra Señora de los Angeles" (Our Lady of Angels). A post office called Erie was established in 1887, and remained in operation until it closed on March 13, 1955. The CameoGold Rush began around 1885 when deposits of gold were found near present-day Erie. The discovery led to a wave of migration to Western Colorado by men prospecting for gold and silver. By 1886, over 20 mining towns had sprung up along the Clear Creek River basin; all but one were abandoned by 1907 because of low prices for gold and other minerals. In 1889, James Wickersham opened his mill on Buffalo Creek within sight of modern-day Erie City limits; he quickly became known as the "Father of Buffalo Creek". In 1896, Wickersham organized a town meeting to consider incorporation but no action was taken due to lack of support from residents; however, ten years later a group led by Mayor John Prentice applied for incorporation and again failed due to lack support from citizens. On December 5, 1902, construction began on what would become downtown Erie with initial funds raised through an auction conducted by local newspaper publisher Jules Fenton as part of Colorado's centennial celebration. The first building erected in downtown Erie was the Keystone Hotel which served as both a hotel and library until it burned down in 1923 . In 1901–1902 two new schools were built: Iroquois School (now Elmhurst) on Armory Boulevard across from Seventh Street SW and First Avenue SW; Stinson School (now US High School) along Main Street between Third Avenue SW and Fourth Avenue NW; followed by Central Park Elementary School (now Whitefish Elementary School) located at 14th Street SW between Main Street NW and Fifth Avenue NW . Also during this time several stores/cafes opening up throughout downtown including prominent businesses such as mechanic shop Simonson & Sons Hardware Store/Gas station Mrs Sweeney's restaurant etc., giving rise to what is now known as 'the old core'. In 1916 city fathers decided that they needed more services like water supply so they started working on getting money from private investors who donated land south side main street between 3rd avenue sw intersecting 4th avenue n then work started moved eastward taking out some trees also sewer line went under main street also some houses got destroyed while many others got reconstructed thank you very much your name will be remembered forever
