The first settler in what is now Erie was George C Smith who arrived on horseback from Missouri on July 12th , 1887 . The first people to live in what is now Erie arrived from downstate New York about 12 miles (19 km) north of where it now stands. The area that would become Erie was explored by Spanish traders in 1598 with some landing here around 1624 CE. One report said "a great many natives were killed or scalped" when these men discovered an abandoned Indian village on the opposite shore of Lake Erie about 12 miles wide (19 km) south of present day Buffalo Township on Canandaigua Creek.[2] A group led by George Stephenson reached Eagle Point () east of Buffalo on September 17, 1881 after leaving Delaware Water Gap (). On December 8 they set up a cabin near what is now Beaver Street () east of Main Street (). On January 2oth, 1882,[3] commissioners appointed by Govt. John C. Fremont signed a land grant to George Stephenson JR., James Watt (), Amos Eaton (), Timothy Leary (), David Starr Hill (), Hiram Maxim () for $5 per acre ($25 per sq mi).[4][5][6] With this gift from Governor Fremont new settlers began moving into what is now Erie County: 154 persons arrived January 2nd – equivalent to about 10% of all arrivals during those years[7]. In November 1886 George Stephenson met Captain James Blythe who had just completed his journey across America via steamboat from Detroit Lakes via Buffalo Bayou (); he offered Stephenson passage back across the lake if Blythe could find any promising areas for mining operations along its eastern bank which he did not know existed.[8][9][10] Assembling eleven men under command of Captain John Withers started prospecting for coal near present day Northumberland Avenue (& West Side Road) while also exploring other potential sites.[11][12][13][14] After three months they located two small seams totaling 4 feet (.1 m) deep but capable of containing 24 tons/day [15]; further drilling soon revealed five more seams totaling 128 feet (.50 m) deep with reserves estimated to hold 1 million barrels/day (60 million kg/year). Coalmining finally became reality within two years following successful trials at nearby Northumberland & Western Mills Mines Ltd.;[16] starting August 1889 Eureka Coal Company opened mines northeast off US-6 near modern day Butler barracks; products such as lime, saltpetre, copper ore and chalk were produced there until 1902 when rail connections made it possible to ship these materials inland for marketing purposes instead.[17],[18][19],[20]} The first aluminum company in America was founded here too – Alcoa – when their factory opened October 6th 1907; they manufactured cans and bottles using alumina mined nearby from hillsides abovepresent day Northumberland Ave./West Side Rd.– today’s Horseshoe Bend quarry!
