The first people to live in the area that now Englewood were Native Americans. The land that would become Englewood was first surveyed by George Catlin in 1820. He named it after his friend and neighbor, Gideon Welles." In 1824, John Wesley Powell led an exploration of the Rocky Mountains and discovered gold near what is now Englewood. In 1868, prospectors discovered oil shale under Engelwood Hill as they traveled through the valley on their way toDENVER. This discovery made Engelwood a major center for oil production during the late 19th century. In 1907, Englishman Arthur Conan Doyle lived in Englewoods boarding house until he moved to Denver in 1909 to write "Dracula". Eventually he became one of its most well known residents and frequented many local businesses including The Ponderosa Saloon which still stands today (it closed in 2003). Doyle also resided at 5802 E Park Ave from 1912-1914 while living with his friends Houdini and Lillian Hellman. The current courthouse was built in 1926 by architects Fenton Stone and Leslie Jarrell for $1 million dollars using federal funds available at that time. The building cost $27 million to build overall with approximately 54% spent on infrastructure such as roads, water systems, electrical systems and parking garages Englewoods early economy revolved around agriculture with some cattle ranching continuing until about 1920 when other industries began arriving like aluminum production beginning about 1930 . After World War II there was a large increase in development due to increasing access to natural resources like coal (which has been mined here since 1870) but also because military bases were established here during both World Wars which attracted new jobs seekers ."
