Englewood is a small town in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Englewood School District serves Englewood and its surrounding areas. The school district has over 200 students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. Englewood was named for John Prentice Engle (1833-1912), an American naturalist who studied the Arapaho people and their environment near what is now Englewood. In 1879, Ulysses S. Grant visited the area and recommended that President 1880s Ulysses S. Grant donations to establish a college in Arapaho county to educate Native Americans about white man's interests thereabouts should be used for this purpose instead of simply being distributed to various colleges scattered throughout the country as had been hitherto done—an idea which he had himself originated while stationed on Fort Laramie during the Indian War (1868-69). In 1881, $5,000 was raised from local residents by donation and mortgage sales within two weeks of Grants announcement of establishing a college in Arapaho County; this college became known as Central State College (now University of Northern Colorado). Englewood is a city in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Englewood settler was George Hildebrandt, who arrived in 1867. By 1870, there were 20 families living in Englewood. In 1880 the population had increased to 280 and by 1890 it had stood at 446. At that time Englewood was located just east of Aurora and west of Golden after being gazetted as a town on November 12, 1889 By 1899 the population had grown to 532 and by 1907 it had reached 621 with a high school (now Englewood High School) opening in 1912 In 1928 the City limits were expanded eastward to include what is now Westminster Village In 1930 Englewood became an incorporated city On December 1, 1934 Griggs Park annexed parts of neighboring Arapaho National Forest making it one municipality As annexation progressed through various processes—including Initiative No. 2 filed by Mayor John Fenton to annex more land adjoining Araphaho National Forest—the boundaries kept expanding until finally they intersected with those of Englewood on January 1st 1938 when all but about two square miles within Araphaho were annexed into Englewoods limits
On October 1, 1864, Englewood was incorporated as a town by an act of the Colorado General Assembly. The name for the first town was chosen because it had been land that had been given to Englewood by Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians. The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated and on May 15, 1865, the first post office in Englewood opened. By 1870, there were three stores and twenty-six residents in the new town. In 1875,Englewood became part of the newly formed Denver Territory and on January 12 of that year it elected its first mayor, J. W. Hoyle. On February 3rd,1875, voters approved a petition to create a school district inEnglewood which would include all of Englewood except for two small parcels that adjoined North Park Cemetery at Tenth Avenue and Walnut Street. The school board set up shop on December 6th with thirteen members from five towns within Denver Territory: Englewood (population 577), Golden (population 712), Greenwood Village (population 446), Loveland (population 467), Aurora ( population 308) and Westminster (population 184). In 1876-77, Grigg & Sons grocery store operated out of a building located at Third Street and Sylvan Alley until it burned down in 1880; this is also when the original post office moved into its current location at Ninth Avenue and Wallace Street. In 1881-82 George Leland built a large frame house at Fourth Street corner First Avenue opposite what is now called "the park." This house still stands today next to City Hall across Ninth Avenue from where Mayor John McNamara's law office used to stand before being replaced by City Hall itself in 2003. In 1886 Mrs John Aiken donated some land adjacent to her home between Seventh Street east of Golden Road South and Eighth Avenue north of Cherry Creek which served as the nucleus for what is now known as Platte Mesa Park . Mrs Aiken named her donation after herself - "Aiken Park".
