Englewood is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the Rocky Mountains and along Interstate 25. The first Englewood settlers were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1876. They built a log cabin on the east side of Englewood Creek. In 1881, they founded the townsite of Englewood after purchasing from John Gunnison 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land north of present-day Englewood Cemetery. The original town site was about wide and long with a hilly terrain to the south and west. The town name honor General George Akeley for his donation of land for the new settlement. In 1902, Gail Breslin bought 640 acres (240 hectares) east of present-day Englewood from Wm Eagan for $1 million dollars (). She donated this land to her husband Harry Breslin in memory of their five children – Harry Jr., Aline Breslin, Gail Breslin Weisman and Allan Weisman – who had all died in infancy while living abroad during World War I. The name "Englewood" originated as an English word meaning "pleasant place." Harry Breslin served as mayor from 1924 to 1933 and 1935 to 1938; he also served as a trustee on Douglas County Board of Education from 1922 to 1926 and 1928 to 1932; he was also an unsuccessful candidate for office in 1920, 1924 and 1932. His wife Gail served as vice president on the board from 1946 until her death in 1984. They are buried at Park View Cemetery near Denver .
