Englewood is a small city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,693 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Weld County and the second most populous city in Colorado after Denver. The downtown area of Englewood includes six blocks of Fifth Avenue between Main and Wellington Streets and four blocks of Washington Boulevard near Interstate 25. Other major streets include 14th Street NW, 16th Street NE, 18th Street SW, and 20th Street SE. The first Englewood settler was John Ritchie in 1871. He established a mill on the South Platte River which he named "Ritchie's Mill". In 1881, James Witherspoon opened a grocery store in what is now the heart of Englewood on Second Street NW. Witherspoon was later joined by his brother-in-law George Hitchcock who also ran a grocery store for several years before opening his own general store on First Avenue NE in 1902. The two stores were one block north of where First Avenue now meets Wellington St., across from what is now known as theEnglewood Library building (now part of CU Boulder). In 1907, Sidney Sperry bought out Hitchcock's share in the business and began to sell groceries direct to consumers instead of through his brother-in-law's store. By 1940 Sperry had merged with Safeway Stores Incorporated to form Safeway/Sidney Sperry Company which operated until 1997 when it was purchased by Kroger Co.. In 1963 residents voted to become an unincorporated community under the name "Englewood" after their mayor Abelardo Gomez proposed it during a town meeting organized to celebrate villagehood status granted by state law that year. At that time there were only three functioning businesses within town limits: Mr.'s Store (which closed around 1970),the library (opened 1954), and our post office (opened 1908). By 1980 there were 11 businesses within town limits including 3 restaurants/cafés; 2 hardware stores; 1 dry goods store; 5 tobacconists; 1 beauty salon/spa; 1 printing shop; 1 florist; 1 pet Supplies & Equipment Ltd.; 2 convenience stores - Champs Sports Mart on 15th Ave., Super Stop at I-25 & Red Rocks Rd./Pennywise Emporium on 17th Ave.; 2 gas stations - Speedway gasoline station just southwest of town center on I-25 eastbound exit off ramp from I-25 concurrent with State Highway 24A and Keystone Service Station eastbound off ramps from I-25 south both sides of highway) plus 3 nursery schools serving children aged 0–6 months: Our Lady’s School (founded 1909), Sacred Heart School (founded 1911), St Joseph’s Catholic Church Academy Nursery School No.-1 ( founded 1913) In 2000 Energizer Holdings Corporation acquired Safeway/Sidney Sperry Company for $5 billion including all its assets except its UAW unionized grocery employees who held about 54% of total outstanding shares but no voting rights because they are considered administrative members rather than owners under UAW rules ().
