Englewood, Colorado is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1861 as Englewood Township and became a city in 1912. The current mayor is Susana Martinez and the city council is made up of six members who are elected at-large. The first people to live in what is now Englewood were traders from England and Scotland who came overland through Utah Territory during the 1860s. They name their settlement after Engelwood Forest near Manchester, England. In 1867, General Edmund Custer mistakenly thought Englewood was Indian territory when he invaded that region and burned many villages including Fort Bridger on July 8th of that year. This event led to the US government awarding Englewood City status on February 14th of 1912. The early years ofEnglewood were difficult because it was located withinwestof Denver which had a large population and infrastructure while also having an open prairie country full of windmills and other farming operations. However, thanks to some innovative thinking by Mayor John McNichol (1922-1927), the city quickly began to develop transportation options such as electric streetcars which helped improve connectivity between downtown Denver and its rural surroundings. In 1876, Englewood was founded as a small Colorado town by Mormon pioneers. It rapidly grew into a busy and thriving community, with its own newspapers, churches, schools and businesses. The town's name has been changed several times over the years - in 1902 it became Englewood Park; in 1920 it became Englewood Heights; in 1966 it became Englewood; and finally, in 1976, it reverted to its original name ofEnglewood.
