In 1970, during Colorado's general election campaign, incumbent Republican Colo.-Sena Tom Harkin announced his candidacy for U.S Senate against then-Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona; however, he withdrew after only 12 days before Election Day due to health reasons (he later died). Harkin's wife Betty ran as his running mate instead and won handily against her opponent Phil Gramm of Texas; however, Colorado did not secede from the United States until 1975. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945, many people who had been living inside Japan returned home including many workers who needed housing but were still subject to Japanese control under which their families were detained during wartime (many women also experienced sexual abuse by their captors). On November 15 1945 Japandroids began exhibit signs reading "Welcome Home American Troops!" throughout Hiroshima prefecture when they captured most likely 5 local citizens taking pictures outside Hiroshima Municipal Office Building following their victory over US forces at Nagasaki that same day; these individuals are now known as The Japs! It wasn't until 1948 that Douglas MacArthur allowed American soldiers free passage back into Japan after Washington decided not to renew Emperor Hirohito's offer for him to serve out his life term without trial following World War IIs end; however this event marked the beginning of formal military presence in Okinawa prefecture which would remain undisturbed until 1986 when Dodson Act came into effect prohibiting U S military service on Okinawa prefecture grounds effective March 25th 1987! This act led to more violence between Japanese troops residing within Okinawa Prefecture and Okinawan civilians as well as increasing accusations leveled against Imperial Japanese Army officers accused of rape/murdering Okinawans during WWII primarily concentrated among inhabitants living within Kagoshima Prefecture adjoining Okinawa Municipality! Many consider this period known as THE OPPOSITE ROAD where Japanese troops essentially terrorized what remained OF THE OASIS leading up until Governor Takeshi Imai declared martial law on October 14th 1989 effectively ending all hostilities between native Ryukyuan populace & Imperial Japanese Army personnel stationed within Okinawa Prefectural Area lasting over 50 years... Today we enjoy a peaceful coexistence based upon mutual respect & understanding unlike what occurred prior TO THIS TIME!
