In 1924, when Denver-Aurora was formed from two separate municipalities - Englewood to the east and Greenwood Heights to the north - its boundaries were expanded further by annexing much of what is now Auraria County toDenver-Aurora. This included most of what is now southern Greenwood Village and much of what is now eastern Englewood Township (including modern day Littleton). By 2000, however - due largely to suburban sprawl - only about 25% of that entire population still lived within city limits; most residents resided elsewhere within Aurora or Rocky Mountain counties. In 2003 – following an election campaign promise by then Mayor Dick Thornburgh – City Council passed an ordinance expanding city boundaries yet again by annexation over portions of South Park District including Commerce Center Mallards Landing Shopping Centre and parts of Cherry Creek Ranch before reaching Interstate 70 just beyond Engelwoods borders.
