In 1941, when World War II began and Denver became an all-out military city due to its strategic location near Lake Mead National Recreation Area and other resources, Englewood lost its high school but regained full access to public education in 1945 with construction of Highland Park High School across Sheridan Boulevard from City Hall on South First Street. A new library opened in 1966 on East Haskell Avenue adjacent to Highland Park High School as part of Mayor Elmer Robinson's Crusade for Libraries campaign; this library was eventually transferred to University Heights Library complex following annexation by University Heights in 1998. That same year saw demolition begin on what remained of Shacklebolt Elementary School which had been built in 1928 as part of plans for consolidation across Denver into six large cities under Mayor Thomas Moffatt; during this period Shacklebolt was known locally as "Homeschooled Hill". By 1974 only two outbuildings remained standing: Old Mill StoreBuilding (now Demolition) off County Road 6 interchange east side and Mrs Fenton's House/School garage along County Road 5 south side (now lot #1 at Civic Center Square). Services were withdrawn from old HSLD buildings beginning around 1975 due largely to cost overruns associated with roof replacement projects statewide at that time; however some structures continued To Be demolished until their eventual closure such as Home Nursery next door which closed circa 1985-1986 whenDENVER SCHOOL DISTRICT PURCHASED THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND CLOSED THE HOME NURSERY

Englewood is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,528 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Englewood residents were citizens of Fort Lyon on the east side of Englewood Reservoir. They began to settle there in 1871 and built homes around the reservoir. The community name may be derived from English word "engle" meaning "plain." In 1877, John Engle donated land to become a town. He had come to America from England as a boy and was interested in farming and ranching. In 1876, he sold his half ownership of the village site for $10,000 to other investors including his son Alvin and brother Charles Witherspoon. The town was incorporated on December 6, 1880 by an act of the Colorado General Assembly under the name Newtonville. At that time it included only Englewood Reservoir along with parts of present-day Wheat Ridge and Golden Park neighborhoods on both sides of I-25 north/south between Interstate 25th Street and Durango Avenue east/west between Durango Avenue and South Platte Avenue (later US 36). The town grew quickly; by 1900 its population had reached 10,000 people.
