Englewood is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Englewood post office was established on February 14, 1892. The name "Englewood" was derived from a variant spelling of the word "enclave." The first Englewood school opened in 1895 and was known as the First National School. In 1907, it became the Englewood School District No. 1 and remained that way until 1963 when it became Englewood School District No. 2. In 1965, residents of Englewood formed the city of Englewood to coincide with their desire for a more centralized government control over their lives and businesses. On November 3rd of that year, they voted by referendum to become an unincorporated village surrounded by urban development; however this form of governance continued until 1992 when it merged into the City of Denver effective January 1st, 1993. On July 12th 1953 two men driving automobiles ran off a road near Pikes Peak and were killed; their names were John Dickey (aged 31) and Roy Hildebrandt (aged 33). They are buried in Lone Tree Cemetery on State Highway 24 east of town. The events leading up to this tragedy have been studied extensively by local investigators who still investigate potential causes to this day.
