The Englewood school district was created in 1902. In 1903, the firstEnglewood High School class graduated. In 1907, the Englewood Athletic Association was formed and the first football game was played between Englewood and Our Lady of Lourdes HS. In 1912, the first tennis match ever was held in Englewood by Mrs. Owen against Mr. Evans from Thornton HS. In 1915, a girls' high school program began and in 1922, a boys' high school program started.
Englewood is a city in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 103 at the 2010 census. It has a population of over 200,000 people and is the second-largest city in Douglas County after Greenwood Village. The town was platted in 1892 by Horace Greeley and his wife Lydia Maria Engle. The name was chosen to honor prominent Englishman Richard (Dick) Engle who had come to Colorado Springs to establish an oil refinery there in 1887. Englewood grew rapidly due to its location near Keystone Lake and the railroad tracks that ran through it. A post office was established at Englewood on July 10, 1893, and became operational on October 1, 1893. The first store opened in 1895 - a hardware store run by J.F. Nugent and his brother-in-law Cuthbert Soper from what is now called Northeast 6th Street & Park Avenue NE. In 1898 the family of Julius Duhalde bought land east of town from developer John Rolfe for $3 per acre; this land would become known as "Duhalde Heights". In 1902 Duhalde donated 5 acres (2 ha) of his property between 9th Ave & 11th Ave NE to the City of Denver for use as a public park with benches, trees, fountains etc., which still stands today as Englewood Park! In 1907 Gertrude Whitney donated 2125 sq ft (211 m2) of her home on 8 Mile Rd NW which becameEnglewood High School! On April 15th 1912 Phebe Hendrickson married Walter Henton at Stake Center Methodist Church - their daughter Winnie later married Orville Noyes who also founded Noyes Aircraft Corporation in Aurora CO).On December 4 1916 during World War I Mrs Ernest Ladd gave 3 acres (1 ha) along Estero Creek SW side of US 66 east thereof to be used as a training ground for American soldiers with no buildings being erected until 1922 when they were moved into barracks built adjacent thereto...the town began expanding rapidly with frame homes being constructed all aroundwhat is now called Arvada Boulevard just south of I-25 next door to Regency Ballroom Theatre before becoming fully developed as one large municipality during WWII when annexation ensued! Today's skyline can be seen looking east towards Interstate 25 across Steele Canyon
