The Englewood post office was established on July 1, 1881, and closed on October 15 of that year. On January 1, 1902, it reopened under the name "Englewood". The current spelling comes from a merger of two adjacent town names: "Engle" from east side and " wood" from west side. The first settler in Englewood was John Bigham who arrived in 1876 with his family. He platted what is now the eastern edge of Englewood and named it after his home state of New York. In 1886 David Hargrave settled in what became the western edge of Englewood and named it after himself as well as another nearby settlement called Hargraveville (now Brighton). By 1888 all three settlements had merged into one village known as Englewood. That year residents voted to change theirdisplay name to "Englewood" because they felt that its new pronunciation would be more popular than alternatives such as "Highland", "Glen", or even just "Colorado". The vote resulted in about 60% voting for the changeover over30% who abstained due to confusion about which name to choose given that there were several different engLEWOOD towns across America with similar nicknames including Highland Park (Chicago), Glencoe (New York City), and Holland Patent (Michigan). Although some people objected to being changed from their original nicknames during initial testing/ announcement of the new spelling no one ever filed a lawsuit challenging this decision since at that time nicknames were considered municipal titles granted by local officials without any challenge or right to sue exercisable only by individuals who commited fraud or instituted an unconstitutional act within CITY limits! Today's municipality has grown out of small parcels located near each other along State Highway 24A which bisects Douglas County north-south while remaining connected by Interstate 25E running through its center; these small areas have joined together creating today's enlarged community including parts of Aurora and Lakewood along with some unincorporated land located east and west of I-25E within sight but not reachable by car nor walk...the result being an area larger than San Francisco proper yet compact enough for daily living despite containing less than half its population! In spite of having experienced rapid growth over the past few decades due largely to annexation - most notably in recent years through both urban sprawl resulting in annexed land stretching beyond city borders into neighboring counties - much remains unchanged or nearly so regarding day-to-day life in this rapidly growing community spanning 3 square miles facing southbound I-25E sandwiched between Cherry Creek Reservoir on one side and residential neighborhoods bordering Cherry Creek Reservoir on the other;residential areas continue developments like high risesDouglas High School & Community Center completed last year inside already annexed lands extending beyond city boundaries into Arapahoe County are still mostly single family homespun bungalows dating back before annexation began reaching streetcar lines services available today almost 400 years ago continuing Train service running every 30 minutes until midnightrainy days bring out farmers markets Saturday mornings followed by antique shows Saturdays afternoon bringing much needed incomeinto town during daytime hours giving plentyof opportunity for retail shoppingand occasional live performances becoming Montrose Theater

The first Englewood settlement was established in 1868 when John Engle and his family moved from Nebraska to what is now Douglas County. They named their new community after Engelwood Forest near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Englewoods were among the earliest settlers in the area and built a log cabin on what is now North Main Street. In 1872, they also founded an gristmill on South Main Street which still stands today. In 1875, Congressman James Wickersham designated land in Douglas County for the purpose of founding a village by combining parts of two existing villages – Englewood and Arvada – with the intent of creating a more centralized government center for all of Douglas County. On February 4th of that year, residents voted to form the Village of Englewood and named it after themselves. The Village had its first meeting on March 12th of that year and soon began construction on its initial buildings including a schoolhouse, storehouse, blacksmith shop, doctor’s office and post office. The village flourished for many years until economic factors caused it to decline starting around World War II when production at most local mills stopped abruptly due to competition from overseas."
