Englewood, Colorado is a town in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. The population was 11,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Englewood Post Office opened on September 14, 1892 and closed on April 30, 1961. The town was named for George Engel (1836-1920), an American banker who had bought land in the area in 1881. Engelwoods first store was built on what is now State Highway 24. The first post office building in Englewood was a two-story wood frame structure erected by Leland Sibley in 1893. It served as the depot until 1912 when it became the town hall under mayor Charles Harkins. In 1907, representatives from Englewood organized a school district which included most of present day Jefferson County. The first school buildings were designed by architects John Wesley Powell and Luther Burbank and construction began in 1909. In 1915, voters approved an act to change the name of the town to Englewood after New York City Mayor James Waring (1845–1921). Banking pioneer George Engel donated $5,000 to help finance acquisition of land for a new high school campus that would include football and basketball courts as well as other sports facilities across from his original storeroom at 356 Broadway Street NW (now State Highway 24). On October 15, 1926 Englewood's first graduating class received their diplomas from Westminster School District No 2 with music conducted by Dennis McNaughty (1915-2002) and general exercises by Drs Edward Meeks and Harry Pritchard (1900-.1963)). Englewood is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins-Loveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The firstEnglewood settlers were George and Sarah Englewood who arrived in 1867 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They named their new land "Englewood" after their friends and neighbors in that area, Ebenezer (George) Englewood and his wife Esther (Sarah). The Engleswoods were among the earliest settlers in what would become Weld County. In 1870 they built the first home in present-day Englewood on a lot acquired from David Farnsworth near the current intersection of Ulysses Road and Dixie Highway. In 1872 Fayettevilleurner John Afton founded the "Fenway Park Livery Service", which soon became one of Colorado's largest horse services businesses with operations out of 8 different locations throughout the state. Afton also served as mayor of Fort Collins from 1904 to 1912 Afton Elementary School was built in 1918 on what is now Northwest corner of Dixie Highway and Ulysses Road across from where today's Midland High School stands. The name change to Englewood Elementary School occurred when it merged into Loveland Unified School District during construction of Loveland High Schools original $100 million campus project (now called Westside Campus). The Orchard Park Shopping Center was completed adjacent to Midland High School in 1954; this shopping center anchored by JCPenney & Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., Kressner Bros., Federated Department Stores, and other large retailers formed what are now known as Old Town Downtown Loveland
