Durango is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It has been home to some of the most significant events in Colorado history and its people have played an important role in many aspects of the state's history. The first permanent settler in what is now Durango was John C. Fremont who arrived in 1868. He named his new land "Fremont Park." In 1870, George Hinkle bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land north of present-day Durango for $5 per acre. This land later became part of the University of California at Berkeley Campus and still bears that name today as part of UC Berkeley's Golden Gate Park. In 1876, Pueblo Indian Chief Manuel Espinosa married a daughter of Kit Carson and moved his people from their canyon south to this area where they founded what would become Durango.Durango began its growth as a mining town when silver was discovered nearby on January 6, 1881 by James Wetherbee. Wetherbee leased 8 square miles (20 square kilometers) from Pueblo for $800 per year with an option to buy it back at any time during the five-year term. By 1886, there were over 300 miners living in and around Durango while also developing other far-reaching interests such as water supplies, railroads, cattle drives and agriculture. A post office was established at Durango on September 9, 1888; it continues operation to this day under the name "Durango." The discovery led to rapid growth for durangosite which made them one of the richest silver mines in America until 1893 when production peaked due to increased investment by Anglo American Corporation Limited Partnership (the current owner). In 1902 Harry Bates opened up another silver mine near Silverton but within two years all mines had closed because machine tools could not be used to extract silver from ore larger than 20 pounds (.9 kg). In 1899 alumnus Tooey Smeaton started construction on Newnham Hall which would become one of Denver’s most famous landmarks after becoming president of Columbian Electric Railway Company – predecessor operator Denver Western Railway Company – and donating land for its construction which included a locomotive shed and passenger depot on Monument Road just east Of Main Street NW between Cherry Hills Boulevard NE and 24th Avenue NW
Durango was founded in 1876 by traders from the United States and Mexico. The area now encompassing Durango was part of Mexican territory until 1849, when it became part of the United States. In 1912, Durango joined the Colorado Statehood Movement and adopted its current name.
