The Durango, Colorado taser history can be traced back to at least the early 1990s. In October 1997, after months of public outcry over high numbers of complaints about people suffering from electric shock following encounters with officers wielding stun guns or firearms, Durango Mayor Donny Hull approved the deployment of 350 TASER devices by law enforcement across all cities in western Colorado for Operation Safe Streets; this initiative aimed to reduce injuries and fatalities from encounters with law enforcement officers through deterrence and education programs. On October 3rd 1998 Durango police officer Omar Castillo shot and killedlift truck driver Gary Welsh while he was attempting to stop Castillo from assaulting his wife outside her home; Castillo had earlier threatened Welsh’s pregnant wife with racial slurs before taking her into custody moments prior. That same yearDurango became one of only two municipalities in western Colorado (the other being Aspen)to approve use of "taser darts" by law enforcement against suspects considered likely threats or fleeing fugitives; these units could fire up to 16 darts per second at close range using pressurized gas cartridges filled with nonlethal chemicals such as mace or pepper spray). The next year saw more significant changes occur within the Durango Police Department as they began fielding new models of Tosers including: Tosers II (which featured 5 dart chambers), Tosers III (a model which incorporated an infrared sensor into each dart chamber allowing for quicker target acquisition), Tosers IV (an advanced electronic control system that allowed officers to fire pinpointed darts without having them enter any vital areas), TSG-1(an 8 dart unit designed specifically for large animals such as bears),and TSG-2(a 10 dart unit capable OF shooting group shots).

As an agricultural center for much of its history, Durango has also been known for its cheese production which continues to be a major industry today.
In 1847, the first post office in Durango was established. In 1868, the railroad arrived in Durango and started carrying goods to and from the nearby mining towns of Silverton and Telluride. By 1900, Durango had a population of over 4,000 people. The city's growth continued until the early 1920s when it peaked with a population of around 12,000 people. However, during World War II, Durango's economy slumped as a result of the war effort and its residents were forced to flee to other cities in Colorado or Mexico. After the war ended in 1945, Ruggero Lorenzoni became mayor of Durango and led the city through an era of rapid growth that saw it reach its peak population size by 1960.
