Durango, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of northern Colorado. The population was 587 at the 2010 census. Durango is located on the south side of the Continental Divide, east of Arapaho and west of Grand Lake.The town began as a trading post on the east side of the Divide in 1875 by settlers from Arizona Territory and it became an incorporated town in 1907. In 1957, Durango was named one of fifty U.S. towns to be included in UNESCO's World Heritage List for its cultural treasures. The name "Durango" comes from two Spanish words: "durango," meaning 'old fort' and "gomblán," meaning 'the Gunnison River.' The early history of Durango can be traced back to 1776 when Pichetto and his party (six men) arrived at what is now called Main Street in what is now Durango and established a trading post called Pueblo de los Volcanes (Cave dwellings). They built their first store there in 1777 before moving to what is now Coal Mine Road and opening up a fur business. By 1800, they had acquired land on both sides of the Gunnison River where they founded San Miguel County (later part of Colorado). When gold was discovered near La Plata Creek in 1859, many Mexicans began arriving in significant numbers to work on related mining ventures around Durango including Potosi Canyon which later became known as Golden Eagle Mines National Monument & Preserve. Unfortunately for these new arrivals, most gold discoveries were made outside their states so within a few years most Mexicans had returned home while those who remained continued working primarily agriculture until 1861 when New Mexico Statehood was granted to them; this led to increased competition for jobs among Mexican immigrants with some people choosing to move permanently rather than return home after statehood than face possible abuse or exploitation from local Anglo-American miners/businessmen during this period known as The Mexican Period]. Meanwhile, back eastward migrating Native Americans such as the Arapaho continued living along the lower Gunnison River region until about 1800 when white travelers started reporting sightingsof strange things such as fireballs falling from sky or women being kidnapped by Indians leading some believe that these reports may have been inspired by ancient human sacrifices taking place at nearby Mesa Verde National Park according to author Daniel Goldwater although no physical evidence has ever been found linking Mesa Verde National Park with any ritual sacrifice activity.] In 1868 Pachetto sold his interest in Pueblo de los Volcanes and moved his family westward across country reaching Raton Pass just above Aspen where he met another miner named George Richards who recommended him stay with friends Richards also owned an adjacent ranching operation provided grazing land for cattle] In 1870 Richards married Gertrude Sager who soon bore him five children but due to Mining District Act passed that year forbidding polygamy it proved difficult for Richards & Gertrude variety Additional difficulties arose because several other prospectors arrived claiming adjoining claims which eventually led to litigation] At various points over time different groups claiming ownership various sections surrounding Fort Stanton built stagescoops high into cliffs overlooking Raton Valley making wagons stop & pick up passengers then drop them off below Conspicuous Rocks near current day SAPO]] While wrangling over possession numerous parties also explored underground streams flowing through designated areas resulting ultimately only 7 claims were filed with Mineral District office; all seven claimants withdrew their applications within 2 months after receiving word that USGS officials would not allow such exploration]). When USGS Director James Wickersham visited Fort Stanton circa 1872 he observed that there appearedto be large amounts o silver present but no indications how it might be extracted]; upon further inspection Wickersham directed Assistant Superintendent John Custer who supervised geology surveyors Jens Ludwig Bohlen Augustus Webermüller etc., under direction To investigate whether silver veins could be ascertained existing outcrop Lead Singer property abutting northeast edge Of Silver Gulch beyond Which No Prospectible vein Appears]] It appears Wickersham’s original intent was simplyTo extend geology survey operations covering area immediately between Conspicuous Rocks & Silver Gulch - However subsequent events demonstrated otherwise!]] This story begins with James Wickersham's visit...
