Durango, Colorado is a small town in the La Plata County area of Colorado. The population was 1,809 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boulder-Aurora-Cheney Valley micropolitan statistical area. The Durango Mountains are to the south and east of Durango and can be seen from most parts of the town. The climate here is primarily Rocky Mountain National Park type with hot summers and mild winters. Most of the population here engages in agriculture or ranching; some also commute to other towns for work or school. The first European settlers in this area were Spanish miners who prospected for gold near Hereford on July 24, 1829. A post office was established at Durango on October 7, 1829, and named for José Maria de la Garza y Ayala, senador general de México (1799–1858), governor of New Mexico from 1827 to 1830 under president James K Polk. His father had been one of the founders of San Miguel de Allende, now El Paso County, Texas 12 miles west of Durango on Ute Creek Indian Reservation where he lived until his death in 1814 aged 60 years old when he set out with his brother José Mariano Rosales y Ayala to found a new Mexican settlement thereon called San Miguel de Allende en Acción (“Miguel Alto Rancho Viejo”). On January 6th 1800 Pablo Iglesias married Mercedes Romero González and they moved thence to Los Alamos County which included present day Chama County before reaching what is now Durango about two weeks after their arrival on an emigrant wagon drawn by four horses pulling a cart laden with goods including bedding and cooking utensils made from obsidian that had recently been discovered at Jemez Peak northeastward along today's I-25 corridor about 25 miles north-northwest OF Denver This event would forever change not just this little corner of Colorado but America as we know it as we have Sitting Bull leading Crazy Horse against General Custer at Little Bighorn Battlefield over 100 years later

Durango, Colorado is a small town in western Colorado that has been around since the 1800s. The town is located on the San Miguel River, about 25 miles south of Grand Junction and 50 miles north of Denver. It was named for General John A. Logan, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as United States Secretary of War from 1853 to 1857. Durango was also the location of one of the first towns in what would become Colorado. In 1876, ranchers started to arrive in Durango and soon there were homes and businesses lining Main Street. The community grew quickly and by 1907 it had a population of over 350 people. Durango became an important stop on the railroad network and its proximity to Leadville made it an attractive place to live. By 1916, Durango had a school, library, post office, bank and two churches – one Protestant and one Catholic – as well as a few businesses including a grocery store and telephone service. However, during World War I the town was destroyed by fire; however, it re-emerged years later with new buildings and a more active economy.
