In the early 1800s, Durango was a small village in what is now southern Colorado. The first American settlers arrived in this area in 1819 and soon began to build cabins and work on their rancho. By 1825, the community had grown to about fifty people and consisted of a few buildings and an outhouse. In 1829, Durango became the capital of New Mexico Territory. Durango grew steadily during the 1840s as more people arrived to explore this new territory. By 1850, it had a population of around one hundred people and consisted of several buildings and a school. In 1859, Durango became part of the newly created United States Territory of Arizona. After Mexican independence from Spain was announced in 1912, many Mexicans moved into rural areas east of the Animas River in Colorado Province for economic reasons. This migration increased competition for farmland between Anglo-Americans and Mexicans, who were able to purchase land at low prices. The tension culminated with violence in 1914 when Mexican forces attempted to take over some Anglo-American farms near Pueblo del Rio (near modern day Golden).
