Durango, Colorado is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 12,674 at the 2010 census. The name Durango comes from the Kiowa word "durag" meaning "in the middle." It was founded by Manuel de la Hoz and other Spanish explorers on July 14, 1849. For a time it was part of Mexico before becoming part of the United States in 1912. The settlement began as a crossroads for pioneers heading westward from Denver and Sacramento City. In 1911 Durango became an incorporated village with a post office, hotel and school. Durango has since become one of the most popular tourist destinations in San Miguel County due to its natural beauty as well as its many performing arts events that attract music lovers and tourists alike.
In 1864, the United States acquired what is now Durango, Colorado from Mexico. The town was founded in 1867 by Mormon settlers. Durango was named after the nearby mountain range that served as a backdrop for many of the early settler's homes. The first post office was established in 1870, and soon began to become an important center for trade and transportation in the area. By 1880, Durango had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1912, Durango became part of Arizona Territory and later became part of New Mexico Territory. In 1928, it was made part of Colorado.
