As a result of this victory, Durango become an official US Territory and became known as "The Territory of Arizona", while Nuevo León County continued to be part of Mexico until 1912 when it became a state within the United States. On February 14, 1912–the day before Arizona statehood–the first session of the new Arizona Territorial Legislature took place in Durango under elected officials from both Nuevo León and Pima Counties who were also given authority to pass laws pertaining to that territory including statutes on education and justice which were not included within federal law but still had to be approved by Congress prior to being effective. This led to yet another change for Durango when Republican Congressman Wm Hulbert moved into office from Apache Junction (later Phoenix) with full jurisdiction over all Arizonan territory save for Pima County where he remained isolated until his death in 1916 In 1932-1933 durangos voted against admission into The United States as a result of their concerns about social programs proposed by President Franklin D Roosevelt which would have aided Mexicans living abroad while depriving American citizens living east or west of those benefits also known as “the New Deal”. Although they lost this vote 3-2 they did gain valuable concessions such as voting rights for Native Americans through Indian Affairs rather than just Tribal government then having these same rights apportioned based on Census results starting with 1934 After World War II ended war veteran's numbers dwindled due to travel restrictions placed upon America caused by McCarthyism combined with economic recession; however new waves arriving after 1965 brought growth due largely to oil drilling . In 1977 local businessman Donnellson began investing money into tourism which has since propelled Durango onto national radar Today there are over 1 million residents living in downtown Durango making it one of busiest cities in CO., popular tourist destinations include Monument Valley National Monument & Mesa Verde National Park
The Durango area was first settled by the Ute tribe in the late 1800s. The first post office was established in 1892, and Durango became a town in 1907. The city of Durango was incorporated in 1912. The population of Durango reached 1,500 people by 1928, and it grew to more than 7,000 people by 1940. After World War II, the city's economy shifted from agriculture to tourism. In the 1970s and 1980s, there was a growth of methamphetamine production in the region.
