When Durango, Colorado, was founded in 1867 it was the only town in the area. The original settlers were sheep and cattle ranchers who grazed their animals on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains. Durango is a small town in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,839 at the 2010 census. Durango is named after the Durango Hills, an area of high mountains to the west of the town. The first settlers in what would become Durango were three men who came from Pueblo in 1876: Hosea Morse, James W. Bankhead and John Blythe. They started a farm on the east side of Telluride Creek and called it "Morse's Ranch." In 1880 they imported two Scottish brothers—John Macdonald and Donald Macdonald—to run their ranch as well. Three years later they sold out to James Fenton for $10,000. In 1892 durangonee (a type of watermelon) was named after the town by J.D. Noonan when he discovered it growing on a hill about northeast of where Durango now stands. The name stuck and soon became popular throughout San Miguel County because durangonee was not only sweet but also had a deep red color that set it apart from other watermelons being produced at that time. During World War I there were many moves of people and cargo through Durango due to war shortages in neighboring Denver and Kansas City. Some early businesses in town were grocery stores, bakery shops, hardware stores and janitorial services companies before those businesses closed during hard times during the 1920s-1930s when production declined due to competition from meatpacking plants in nearby cities such as Denver and Kansas City
