In 1876, gold was discovered near present-day Durango but no organized effort toounced it until 1886 when José Méndez found some silver at Ouray Lake on the San Miguel River. This led to new mines being developed around Ouray Lake with names such as “Sapphire Hill” due to the high quality of their silver ore. In 1893 Dutton Dry Goods Store opened on Main Street which became one of the most important businesses in Durango for many years before being bought out by JCPenney Department Stores in 1978. Many famous people have had their beginnings or careers here including Pat Boone (born October 15th 1919), Tom Lehrer (born December 14th 1922), Jerry Garcia (born January 20th 1951) and Neil Young (born November 10th 1964). Today, Durango boasts several popular tourist attractions including downtown with its six blocks ofkellner architecture; Silverton Mine State Park with its ancient mining ruins; Ouray Lake with its resorts; Monument Valley National Monument with its natural features; Zuni Museum withinactus Palace; Mountaineering Museum located on an altitude Restriction Zone mountain); Window Rock Mining Museum opposite US 5 near Canon City; Allendale Resort & Casino which offers luxury rooms overlooking Mesa Verde National Park

Durango is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,002 at the 2010 census. Durango is located in the Western Rocky Mountains and has a moderate climate with average monthly temperatures ranging from 20 to 26 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Durango has a cold-summer Mediterranean climate. The first Europeans to visit Durango were Spanish traders and travelers led by José de la Torre who journeyed through the area in 1809. In 1812, Captain Arthur Stonington visited Durango and made an assessment of its potential for trade with the Spanish Empire. He recommended that Fort Stanton be built on the east bank of Clear Creek so that travelers could avoid traveling overland from San Miguel County into Douglas County and then downriver to Pueblo (now Canon City). After fortifying Fort Stanton in 1814, Governor Manuel Micheltorena extended California grants to settlers near this site including David Yurok, John Evans and others on December 11, 1816; these grants included 3 leagues square (approximately 8 miles) of land grant covering most of present-day Durango Township and parts of El Paso County. In 1865, as part of General George Armstrong Custer's march across Kansas during the American Civil War his forces invaded Mexico along what is now Ute Pass between Cherry Creek Indian Reservation and Black Mesa Reservoir above Granite Reservoir On July 24th 1865 Custer's command discovered Mexican gold mines about 12 miles southeast of what is now Palace Rock on Ute Pass On October 10th 1865 US Cavalry Regiment under Colonel John Wickersham destroyed two wells near present day Goldfield before retreating back up Ute Pass . This event helped spur development around Palace Rock which began with various hotels being built for miners prospecting for gold . By 1870 silver had also been discovered nearby but it wasn't until 1886 when Kit Carson became Mines Commissioner for Douglas Co., Nevada Territory that mining operations really got underway here The Silver King Mine opened up by 1907 however it closed due to fire in 1912 The discovery of oil at Can Mineral Field No 5 on November 17th 1956 led to increased exploration activity here beginning in 1957 followed by production starting September 1959 However production ceased because environmental issues associated with drilling caused water seeps underneath property
The Durango area was first settled by the Anasazi in the 10th century. The first white people to visit the area were Fur traders in 1824. The area was part of Mexico until 1912, when it became a U.S. territory. The town of Durango was founded in 1868, and became an important mining center during the Gold Rush era. In 1915, Durango hosted the World's Fair, which is still considered one of the most significant events in its history.
