Gun magazines in Durango, Colorado have a long and storied history. At one time, they were some of the most popular methods of storing firearms in the area. Today, however, they are much less common and may only be found in a few select locations. The first gun magazine to be established in Durango was The Western Gunsmiths Supply Company. It was opened in 1892 by John J. Daugherty and his brother-in-law, George W. Harkins. The magazine offered monthly subscriptions for those who wished to buy guns legally from licensed dealers throughout the state of Colorado. Over time, other gun magazines popped up throughout the area. One of the earliest was The Rifleman Magazine which was founded in 1902 by John Burtis and his brother-in-law, George Molnar. It became very successful and continued to operate until shortly after World War II when it merged with another magazine, The Gunfighter News & Guide Company (GNG). GNG would continue to operate until it folded in 1966. Today, there are only a few remaining gun magazines left operating within the boundaries of Durango County along with a handful scattered elsewhere across the state of Colorado as well as Mexico City and several other locations around North America

By 1867, they had been replaced by Mormon colonists who named their community Durango after their new home in Utah. Durango experienced some significant growth during its early years: A store opened here in 1875 and soon became one of the most important businesses in town. This prosperity continued until around 1910 when World War I caused many residents to leave for military service. However, by 1920 Durango had recovered sufficiently to resume its previous level of commerce and industry. Even during these difficult times, however, there was always something special about this small town that helped it remain prosperous despite economic challenges: Its location made it ideal for trading with other parts of Mexico; its close proximity to both rural areas and major cities; as well as its natural resources which gave it abundant opportunities for businesses such as lumbering, mining and agriculture.

This eventually led to Gun Magazine Regulation Act (GMR) which mandated that all firearms must be fitted with magazine feeding systems by 1934
