Durango, Colorado is a small town in San Miguel County, Colorado. The population was 1,714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pueblo West Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Durango were Spanish traders and soldiers who set up a temporary base in 1824 while they surveyed the area for an eventual route to California. One of these men, José Joaquín Córdoba, named the current town after himself because he found it on his trip from Zacatecas to Los Angeles. In 1828, gold was discovered near Pueblo and soon thereafter settlers began arriving in what is now Durango. The first post office was established in 1829 and by 1840 there were over twenty-five residents living in what is today Durango. In 1857, Durango became one of twelve towns incorporated into San Miguel County; this occurred just prior to the arrival of railroad construction which would later create much demand for labor in central Colorado. Today’s downtown core – home to numerous shops and restaurants as well as a library and museum – was once only minutes away from where miners worked during the early days of mining operations here. In fact, many key landmarks still stand today that are representative of those early days including Elephant Butte uranium mine (now closed) located just east of town on US Highway 148; First National Bank building (now Memorial Hospital); Methodist Episcopal Church (now Second United Methodist Church); Masonic Lodge #5 (now Red Rocks Masonic Lodge No 9); Pioneer Mine; and Brushy Hill bath house/cabinetmaker shop (later known as Folsom House). Although some aspects have changed over time such as more recent development within walking distance of downtown rather than being buried under buildings – most notably Elk Creek Casino Resort which has taken up space along Interstate 25 north side – most aspects remain relatively unchanged since 1880 when durangolocal pioneer Lillie Belle came Upon arriving here with her husband Edward Belle from Ohio looking for land west of Pikes Peak Mountains where he had been prospecting since 1853 while employed by John Evans & Company Stagecoach Line Co.. Their wagon train stopped at what is now old Park Plaza south sideof I-25 just north of Old Town before continuing on their journey 2 miles east down Elm Street northwest towards present day Civic Center Drive NW.; thence via rough Driving Road past Brushy Hill Cabinetry Shop across street from Post Office until reaching Operating Mines Road about 7 miles northerly following mines until intersecting Arapaho Hills Rd., then northeast onto Arapaho Hills Rd., finally southwest onto I-25 at old Park Plaza location foregoing intervening dirt roads leading back out again much like their original route did nearly two centuries ago!
