Durango is a classic example of frontier settlement: founded by unincorporated individuals who ranged in wealth from pioneers who had settled near Anaconda Lake to merchants seeking access to rich silver deposits around Fort Collins. These early settlers were drawn to what they saw as opportunities for economic development within easy reach of their homes - a natural corridor linking two major commercial centers in western North America - while also enjoying access to water resources (the Animas River provided much needed irrigation) and agricultural possibilities (the area now known as Durango was once part of several large ranching empires). Today's residents are descendants of these original pioneer families; few haveigrated directly from Canada or Mexico so that there remains strong cultural ties between these communities and their distant immigrant origins. The first mention of Durango occurs in 1868 when prospectors discoveredinite near present day downtown. By 1870, gold had been found nearby so many miners had come that local stores began selling goods made from lead ore brought downriver by steamboats on shipments starting February 26th 1870 from Denver marketplace (now Denver Union Station). Over time other mines followed including some producing uranium which led to construction beginning in 1901-1902 at Alder Gulch Dam on Animas River where power generating capacity would be used until 1959 providing essential support for durangone industry while also creating jobs for menfolk working atop hills 5 miles upstream! In 1912 Geo Wolkentin purchased 2 million acres (10 km²) along the river banks eastward from Glenwood Springs with plans to build up this land into an irrigated farming empire second only to those operating westward along Interstate 25! This purchase generated more than $2 million dollars worthof revenue through crop rotation programs which produced vegetables such as sweet potatoes, cornbread stuffing mix etc., cattle feeders (a key ingredient in livestock feed), hay bales etc., fertilizer products such as phosphate etc., lumber products including pre-made trusses used throughout eastern U.S., cheese manufacturing at Pueblo County Creamery & Cheese factory #1 operated by Mrs Jane Goodall until her death 1984 then continuing operations under new name “The Dairy” continued operation today outbuildings just outside city limits
