In 1862, the first white man to set foot in Durango, Colorado was John Wesley Powell. He and his party of six men explored the Rocky Mountains and Canyonlands region. In 1869, Ulysses S. Grant became the 15th President of the United States and renamed the area Durango County after him. The county seat was moved from Pueblo to Durango in 1875. The railroad arrived in Durango in 1912, making it a major commercial center. On July 16, 1914, during World War I, along with 93 other towns and villages in western Colorado Springs during what is now known as "The Great War Fallout," Durango participated in an American military assault on Telluride Mountain that resulted in over 100 casualties including 19 soldiers killed and 30 wounded at an altitude of 10,000 feet (3000 meters).
