Durango is a small town in Garfield County, Colorado, United States. The population was 554 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Garfield County. In 1864, Durango was founded as a trading post on the Arkansas River by seven trappers and their families. The post was abandoned in 1868 when gold seekers discovered silver at the nearby Silverton Mines. A new trading post was established in 1870, and by 1888 it had become an important center for mail and stagecoaches between Denver and Tucson, Arizona. The town declined during World War I because of its lack of military capability; however, it regained importance after the war when mining operations became more common in the area. In 1951, Durango again lost its importance as a business center when Goldwater Mining Company opened a large open-pit mine near Telluride that led to increased tourism in the area and forced the closure of many local businesses. However, this did not lead to decline but rather an increase in economic activity due to new development around Telluride Airport and other nearby attractions. In 1984–1985, durango restored its once prominent status as an cultural center with major events such as "The Great American Cowboy Festival" and "The Western Folklife Festival." The following year saw another significant event:the premiere of Indian film "Nirvana". Today's economy is based primarily on farming which has been present since before settlers came to Durango ; however some commercial services have replaced agriculture over time including oil production from shale formations located near Durango . Today there are three schools within town limits - one high school (grades 9-12) which serves all students within town limits; two middle schools (grades 7-8) which serve students inside of town limits; one elementary school (K-4) which serves students within town limits only
