In 1863, durum (a type of dried corn) began to be grown here for export; early farmers brought in horses and mules to help with threshing and elsewhere in their crops. Durango grew rapidly because there was good water supplies as well as excellent soil that could support crops such as wheat and barley. By 1876, durum production had reached its peak and some 7500 people lived hereabouts; however during most of that time durum prices dropped because transportation costs went up rather than down with technological advances like railroads. This caused several families which had been producing durum successfully to fold up their tents and leave town in what has come to be known as "The Great Durum Famine". However by 1904 durum prices were so high again that large numbers of people moved back into town from outlying areas due to improved transportation opportunities nearby combined with increasing acreage available for cultivation statewide thanks especially to irrigation projects completed during that same decade by US Army engineers under Lieutenant Colonel Harry Buell II. During World War II many men enlisted from Durango including Sgt Floyd Clifford who served at Pearl Harbor before being honorably discharged; he later became president of University Of Southern California Today much remains unchanged despite years without major development: downtown business district complete except for one store near city limits while Main Street retains its pioneer feel flanked only by two churches – First Baptist Church on one side and Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Parish on the other – both remaining active after more than 100 years together
