Durango, Colorado is a small town in the San Miguel County area of southwestern Colorado. The population was 7,927 at the 2010 census. The townsite was developed around 1887 when three men, John Wesley Hardin, James Irvine and George Waddell set up a post office and trading post on the banks of the Animas River. The name "Druid" was applied to it by General Jesse Wadsworth because there were many Indian trails leading into this area from south-central Mexico. In 1888 rancho grants were given to various persons named Durango including J.W. Hardin (the grantee), Oscar Hahn (a German immigrant) and Pascual Gonzalez (an Apache). A year later an agreement was made between these four individuals whereby they would share cattle among themselves while still maintaining their individual rights as ranchers. In 1892 hardin sold his interest in the rancho to John Matson who then changed its name to Durango Ranchos Mexican land grant #5459 which he shares with his brothers-in-law Hahn and Gonzalez. In 1896 Matson married Clara Morse Bowers who had come over from Kansas Territory during that year's Territorial session as part of a wagon train headed for Arizona via Santa Fe Trail Stagecoach Station When she reached Durango she found that her husband had already taken up residence there with his family Matson organized a provisional government in 1897 under the leadership of Captains Cesar Chavez and Manuel Ramos which lasted until 1898 when he finally gave it up due to lack of support from other ranchers within San Miguel County After years of Mexicali smuggling operations led by Lopez and others located near Telluride, California promoter José Joaquín de Arguelles decided to open an extensive cattle drive into New Mexico Territory in early 1899 and started what became known as The Old World Roundup series transporting more than 200 head of beef each way acrossEight Mile Pass through Rocky Mountains National Park before stopping at Gallup]], but only about 30 head actually arrived in Durango ] As word spread about this new opportunity some other ranchers also began offering drives into old Colorado territory . . . so much so that by 1905 all but two hundred head of Texas Longhorn cattle had been shipped through Gallup].
