As late as 1916, there were still robberies occurring during daylight hours due to criminals trying to steal lighting fixtures from businesses located near intersections where gunfire could be heard coming from (this also happened during prohibition). Throughout most of World War I, Denver relied on hand-held firearms for defense; however, after 1915 when automatic weapons became available, firearm owners began using weapons for protection purposes instead. The first weaponlight was purchased by police officer Wesley Kappler in 1918 and he quickly became popular among officers because it permitted them to see in darkness much better than other officers who depended on lanterns or telescopes for illumination. In 1924,Department Chief William Teller authorized purchase of additional weapon lights although many officers continued using hand-held firearms for defense reasons. Officers soon realized thatweaponlights permits them rapid deployment into darkened areas whereas Lanterns can only be used at nightfall due To its limited range
