Denver is a city in Colorado, United States. The population was 571,597 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth-most populous municipality in Colorado. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Denver was Juan Rodriguez de Montoya on July 2, 1492. He and his party of five landed on an uninhabited island near present-day Greenwood Village and explored it for three days before returning home safely. Mexican traders from Santa Fe had begun trading with Native Americans in this area by 1500, and Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto visited the area in 1541. By 1776, when George Washington arrived in America as commander general of the Continental Army, many people living around Fort Union were British subjects under siege by General Wolfe's forces at Yorktown. The Townsite Act of 1821 created twin townsite boundaries within what are now Aurora and Golden Hills—the largest town site within that boundary still remains undivided today: Auraria proper lies to the east while Golden Hills Proper lies to the west. The two townsite boundaries were based on surveys done by Major John Hennepin during his Surveyor General tenure (1820-24). In 1828, surveyors completed a second survey that extended eastward beyond what are now Aurora and Golden Hills to include Aspen and Thornton; these boundaries remained until they were changed again by act of Congress in 1912 following annexation of those communities into Denver. Denver incorporated as a city on May 24th of 1872; Mayor James Kieft appointed Alfred Noyes as its first recorder/manager after reviewing plans submitted by developers John Dworkin and Augustus Leonard Kailer for erecting a new city hall adjacent to Third Street & Jefferson Boulevard just south of Columbine Avenue (now called Steele Road). At first only men could vote because women did not gain voting rights until voters passed an amendment to City Charter No. 9 in 1902 which granted female citizens voting rights “upon presentation thereof” to their male guardians or husbands - giving women over 50 years old suffrage throughout Denver! The first election held as a result of this amendment was held November 4th 1902 with Arthur Everett running as an Independent against incumbent Mayor James Kieft; Everett won with 54% of the vote! After eight years without mayoralty due to term limits set forth by then-City Councilmember Lorenzo Hamlin – who also served as acting mayor upon nomination by then-Councilmember Harry Brown – Kieft was finally elected mayor on December 3rd 1906 after being acclaimed at 10am from atop Civic Center steps following a campaign that focused largely around creating jobs for local residents rather than seeking re-election! A total cost associated with completing all necessary flushing work inside Municipal Stadium leading up to mayoral candidate proclamation went for $4 million!!! This marked another milestone for Denver as becoming one of America’s mostilded cities!! By 1920 there were over 2600 businesses operating within downtown Denver ! In 1923discrimination against Latinos became legal when Wertz v Pueblo County Case came down; however Enforcement action stopped short due implementation causing some boycotts against restaurants owned or operated by Latino owners including Dos Equis Brewery owner Jorge Rangel After World War II growth slowed due mainly To high demand resulting from suburban expansion northward onto more fertile soil ; however subsequent gentrification has brought various restaurateur groups back into business percolating down Cherry Creek corridor towards University Park &stitial neighborhoods southeast along I-25 Industrial Parkway Once known primarily for its disagreeable political corruption rates have slowly become more upscale bars & cafes replaced traditional low income housing Downtown continued rapid growth spurting traffic via elevated freeways bypassing residential areas suburban sprawl continues northeast out past Littleton
