The city's growth continued through its incorporation as a county in 1861, becoming an incorporated state municipality on July 1, 1912. By 1930, Denver had over 100 occupations (primarily service-providing jobs) with a population of 685,000 people living in 915 neighborhoods covering an area including parts of both downtown and rural areas west of Interstate 25. During World War II the city played an important role as one of America's most populous military cities with over 150 thousand residents assembled into 8 million troops for war effort across all 50 states plus Washington D.C.. After the war ended the population decreased somewhat but stabilized at about 700 thousand by 1960 census numbers however rapid growth since then has caused density levels to exceed 10 times that number making it one of largest URBAN Metropolitan Areas in North America
