Denver is a city located in the Western U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2010 census, Denver had a population of 853,731. The metropolitan area has a population of 1,815,876 and is the 11th most populous in the United States. Denver was founded by Hugh Hennepin in 1806 as Fort Hennepin in present-day Aurora Township on South Park Hill within the current city limits. It grew rapidly with new construction following General James Kipp’s Treaty of 1818 which created Kansas Territory from portions of Mexico and New Mexico. The first permanent settler in what would become Denver was Nicholas Cushing who arrived with his family in 1827 from Connecticut. In 1848, Denver incorporated as a town and named it after George Washington Carver, an early settler and namesake for Carver Park across from downtown. The city experienced rapid growth during the 19th century due to its location at the crossroads of two major trails that led to California and Oregon respectively: The Santa Fe Trail followed by wagon trains carrying goods upriver to Independence Pass while also providing access to coal mines at Telluride and Asotin on the east side of downtown; and US 93 followed by travelers heading westward through Rocky Mountain National Park reached DowntownDenver by 1870.
