The first post office opened at Arapahoe Springs on January 6th, 1860 under the name "Aurora." On July 1st, 1861, it changed its name to "Denver." The following year saw significant growth due to newly developed transportation methods such as railroads and stagecoaches arriving throughout much of Colorado at this time including parts of Aurora County where Denver now stands. In 1865, Fort Larimer was completed just south of downtownDENVER making it one of only two military posts east of San Francisco during that time period; also famous for being home to Pecos Billie whooping cough (now called pertussis) epidemics beginning around 1870 until they were quashed by effective vaccination campaigns between 1870-1880 however some evidence remains extant documenting cases prior to that date On October 15th 1865 Captain William Heath McCoy sent a dispatch via Pony Express from Council Bluffs Iowa advising residents westward along I-25 about goldfields northwest cornerible within 100 miles should someone find them richly situated he offered $5 per tonne plus expenses payable out at various points on route
Denver's history can be traced back to the time when it was a small farming town located in what is now the greater Denver metropolitan area. The first people to live in Denver were the Arapaho, who arrived in 1819 and built a log cabin on the edge of what is now downtown. In 1830, traders discovered gold near mining operations that would later become Denver, and began to arrive from California. The first permanent settlement was made by Mormons on July 24, 1855, when they founded Golden Hill Ranch. By 1860, Denver had grown enough for its own City Council to be elected and incorporated as a city. The population of Denver reached over 100,000 by 1870, making it one of the largest cities in America. The late 1800s saw an influx of Italian Americans as well as Eastern Europeans who were seeking new opportunities in Colorado after escaping persecution at home. They built modest homes and businesses until 1907 when prohibition caused many artistic collisions between different cultures which led to increased crime rates among immigrants (which are still known today). However during this time period young western men such as John Haggerty took up arms against Mexican influences and helped turn Clark County into one of the most Republican counties in Colorado during prohibition era (1920-1920). This activism also led him into legal trouble with Colorado State politicians including then-Governor Andrew Johnson who once said "Haggerty isn’t anything like I thought he was". In 1912 Denver became part of the United States following World War I due to Treaty of Peace ending World War I; since then it has seen continued growth with more than 50% increase in population from 1970-2010 Census alone & continues being ranked top U.S.–largest city by GDP (@$1 trillion)
